Uxbridge Bruins Supports Community Living

Krista drops the puck

Last Friday evening, Krista had the opportunity to drop the puck at the Uxbridge Bruins game in Uxbridge. It was  a thrill for all who were in attendance.

Krista was elated! She was wheeled out on the ice by two Bruins hockey players, followed by the ceremonial puck drop after which she received a big hug from one of the players.

She was surrounded by her family and received a generous welcome of applause from the Uxbridge community! The smile on her face says it all. It has long been a dream of hers to do such a thing.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Comes to Port Perry

We are pleased to be offering a new sport program in Port Perry. Rhythmic Gymnastics is both an individual and team sport in which athletes work with one or two pieces of apparatus including rope, clubs, hoop, ball and ribbon. The sport is open to all ages.

Practices are being held every Tuesday, 4:30pm to 5:30pm, at Immaculate Conception School on Hwy 7A in Port Perry. There is a modest fee of $20 to cover the cost of the facilities. Athletes should wear comfortable clothing (shorts and t-shirt) and gymnastic slippers or bare feet.

We are using the curriculum as identified by Special Olympics Ontario and will be registering our club with this group. As such, athletes will have the opportunity to progress at their own pace and enter competitions on a regional, provincial and national level. Our first practice of the new year will take place on January 10th, but athletes may join at any time.

Click here for more information.  Please contact Lisa George at 905-985-9312 ext 27 or Cathy Parker at 905-985-8511 ext 229 to register or if you have any questions.

Become a Respite Provider

Our Family Home program is looking for people who would be interested in providing brief periods of respite to a family that is caring for someone who has an intellectual disability. As a respite provider, you would welcome the person into your home for a day, or for a week. You would provide temporary respite for families while fostering a person's independence and following our vision statement:

"A community where everyone is valued"

You must be compassionate and respectful of people's differences. You must be mature and have good decision making skills. During visits, the well being of the person in your care would be your first priority. Attractive compensation is available.

If you are interested, please contact Christine Robinson at 905-985-8511 extension 239 or by e-mail: christine@communitylivingdurhamnorth.ca
